Stirbey
In Romania’s far south, the Ştirbey winery sits high up in the hillsides of Dragasani overlooking the meandering river Olt.
There is documented ownership of the Stirbey estate in the 17th century, yet the true growth and development of the vineyards happened under the reign of Prince Barbu Ştirbey between 1873 and 1946.
In 1946 his daughter, Princess Maria Stirbey, inherited the vineyards – which after national expropriation then belonged to the state.
In 2001 the winery began operating again when Baroness Ileana Kripp – granddaughter of Princess Maria Ştirbey – took control of both the property and its revival.
Today only single varietal are planted, to develop with as little interference as possible. New varieties have been planted with more international appeal; yet indigenous varieties remain demonstrating its century-old history and tradition.
